Importance of Moon Sighting in Islam

Moon sighting plays a significant role in determining Islamic months, especially Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Dhul-Hijjah (for Hajj and Eid al-Adha). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructed Muslims to start and end Ramadan based on moon sighting.

Hadith on Moon Sighting

“Fast when you see the crescent and break your fast when you see it. If it is obscured, then complete thirty days of Sha’ban.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1909)

Dua for Moon Sighting (Chand Dekhne Ki Dua)

When a person sights the new moon (crescent), it is recommended to recite the following supplication:

Transliteration:

Allahu Akbar, Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam, wat-tawfiqi lima tuhibbu wa tardha. Rabbuna wa rabbukAllah.

Translation:

“Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, bring this moon upon us with security and faith, peace and Islam, and success in what You love and are pleased with. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah.” (Tirmidhi 3451)

Moon Sighting Process & Criteria
