Khutba Jumma in English (First)

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness
and upon Him we rely. We ask Him to protect us from the evil of our
selves and the shortcoming of our deeds. Whom so ever Allah guides
nobody can lead him astray and whom so ever Allah leaves to stray,
nobody can guide him to the straight path. And we witness that there is
no god but Allah and that Mohammad is His servant and His messenger,
whom He sent with true religion as a bearer of good tidings and as a
warner of (punishment) before the Hour comes. Whosoever obeys Allah
and His messenger he is on the straight path and whosoever disobeys
them he has strayed and he will not harm anybody except himself and he
may never harm Allah. The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the
best way of life is that of the Prophet Muhammad’s way of life
(SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam). The most evil of the matters are those
Which have been invented (having no proof in Quran and Sunnah) and
each invented matter is a deviation from the right path and each deviation
leads to the hellfire.
I seek refuge with Allah from satan the outcast; in the name of Allah, the
most beneficent the most merciful.
Allah says in the Holy Quran:
Translation of Meaning: O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is
proclaimed for the Salât (prayer) on Friday (Jumu’ah prayer), come to the
remembrance of Allâh [Jumu’ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salât
(prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing), That is better for
you if you did but know! (9) Then when the (Jumu’ah) Salât (prayer) is
ended, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allâh
(by working, etc.), and remember Allâh much, that you may be successful
(10) And when they see some merchandise or some amusement [beating
of Tambur (drum) etc.] they disperse headlong to it, and leave you
(Muhammad SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam) standing [while delivering
Jumu’ah’s religious talk (Khutbah)]. Say “That which Allâh has is better
than any amusement or merchandise! And Allâh is the Best of providers.”
(11) (Al-Jumu’ah: 9-11)
May Allah bless us and you with the great Quran. I seek pardon from
Allah for me and you and for all the Muslims. Surely Allah is bounteous;
generous, King, The Ever-Benign, the compassionate, the merciful.

Khutbah-e-Jumma (Friday Sermon)

The Khutbah (sermon) of Jumma (Friday) is an essential part of the Friday prayer. It is delivered by the Imam before the congregational prayer and consists of two parts: the first khutbah and the second khutbah. The purpose of the khutbah is to remind the congregation about the importance of faith, good deeds, and being mindful of Allah in all aspects of life. It serves as both a spiritual reminder and a guide for practical conduct in everyday life.

1. First Khutbah

The first khutbah usually begins after the Imam ascends the pulpit (minbar). The Imam starts by praising Allah, sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and reciting verses from the Quran. The first khutbah typically includes:

  • Praise of Allah: The Imam praises Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala), reminding the congregation of His greatness, mercy, and power.
  • Reminder of Taqwa (God-consciousness): The Imam encourages the listeners to fear Allah, to be conscious of Him, and to live righteous lives. A common phrase used is:
“Ya ayyuhal-ladhina amanu, ittaqullaha haqqatu qatihi wa la tamutunna illa wa antum muslimun.”
(O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims.)
  • Message of Morality and Righteousness: The Imam may address a specific theme or reminder about the importance of certain values such as honesty, kindness, or patience. This could be based on a relevant event, a verse from the Quran, or a hadith.

2. Second Khutbah

After a short pause (where the Imam sits briefly), the second khutbah begins. It is shorter and focuses on concluding the message. The Imam often:

  • Recites a Short Prayer: The Imam prays for the well-being of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Muslim community, and asks for guidance and forgiveness for all.
  • Encouragement for Good Deeds: The Imam may remind the congregation to engage in acts of worship and charity, as well as to fulfill their responsibilities to family, community, and society.
  • Dua (Supplication): The Imam ends the second khutbah with a heartfelt supplication, asking Allah for forgiveness, mercy, and blessings for the congregation and the entire Muslim Ummah.

After the second khutbah, the Imam leads the congregation in the Jumma prayer (two rak’ahs).

Key Points for the Khutbah:

  1. Short and concise: The khutbah should not be too long, keeping the focus on the essential message.
  2. Clear and relevant: The sermon should address issues that are relevant to the audience, guiding them on how to live a better life in accordance with Islamic teachings.
  3. Reminder of Allah’s greatness: Every khutbah emphasizes the importance of fearing Allah and striving for righteousness.

The Khutbah serves not only as a reminder of spiritual obligations but also as a way to promote unity, peace, and moral integrity within the Muslim community.
